# 3176  Two-Time All-Americans

[Ed Note: As we celebrate 100 Years, we will be looking at players and coaches throughout the time period. Today, lets look at some special players (from the 1970's through 2020's.)]

uslca_usalacrosseThe first National Interscholastic Lacrosse Association All-Americans in Section V were awarded in 1971 when Andrew Gallina* from Irondequoit and Jim Darcangelo from Corning East were the recipients.  Gallina led the league is points his senior year and continued his career at Brown. Darcangelo went on to play at Towson, where he was a three-time All-American, two-time “Player of the Year” and was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in 1990.

As of this writing, there have been 208 All-American awards from 1971 to 2021. The formula for the number of awards has changed over the fifty years and the one constant in the process is that the coaches in the section have selected the winners.

Fifteen players have had the great distinction of being selected in both their junior and senior years.

Fairport celebrated as over a dozen student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to study and play at Division I or Division II schools. Among the group were six from the boys lacrosse team: Tanner Soudan (UMass Lowell), Nick Krug (Delaware), Jake Knapp (Air Force Academy), Klay Stuver (Cornell), Alex Nicastro and Gavin Ingalls who will move on to Mercyhurst.

Penn Yan needed overtime for their trip to the Championships, and Victor has periods of running time in their win over Corning. Webster Thomas had a close first half with Jamesville-DeWitt, but finished their exciting season at CN-S today.

Three of the four quarterfinals were mismatches with the higher seeded team winning, but in the #4-#5 match up it with the number five seeded Webster Schroeder, taking out Fairport (#4) in a 10-9 overtime thriller.

In a game that see-sawed back and forth, Thomas scored the winning goal in overtime to defeat Pittsford 12-11. On the other end of town Penfield defeated Schroeder by a goal in the last minute of the game.

The greatly anticipated contest between Victor and Pittsford was resolved, at least at this point, tonight when Victor overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit and scored seven goals in the second half to beat the Panthers 9-6.

Among the seventeen games played today were two in Webster and they both had exciting finishes. Schroeder hosted Fairport in a game that started with a 1-1 half and ended with the Raiders winning 4-3.

There were interesting games today and two of the more interesting were won by one goal. Thomas beat Fairport 12-11 and Penfield beat Penn Yan 9-8. Churchville-Chili defeated HFL 16-13 and Irondequoit defeated Brighton 10-7.

Irondequoit has a 15-9 win over visiting Ithaca while Livonia used a last minute flurry to take Rush-Henrietta in overtime. Waterloo and Midlakes played a close game, but the Indians held on to their one goal lead for the win.

# 1457  2018 Season Wrap Up

Section Five lacrosse saw some changes in teams as Greece combined four schools into the Greece Storm and Livonia joined with Avon to form the Lakers. The Rochester city schools combined to form East United. With the changes and combinations, there were thirty-five teams and 942 players. Fairport carried the largest roster with forty players and Batavia had the smallest with sixteen.

The All Star list is out recognizing the Monroe County League players for the 2018 season. Senior offensiveman Reese Burek (Fairport), senior attackman Trevor Ford (Thomas), senior golaie goalie Chayse Ierlan (Victor), senior midfielder Alexander Mabbett (Victor), senior attackman Brady McDermott (Brighton) and senior midfielder Garrett Ruff (HF-L) were named US Lacrosse All Americans from Monroe County.

# 1449  Victor Falls to Garden City

Garden City returned to the State Finals for the first time since 2013 when they won the Title game over Jamesville-Dewitt 13-8.  Today they defeated the three-time defending State Champion Victor Blue Devils.  The Trojans came to win and took and early 3-1 lead that they never quite gave back.  The first and fourth quarters were a flurry of activity while the middle two quarters showed a lot of testing from both teams.  The Trojans were led in offensive by junior James Basile (3g) and Liam Muldoon (2g-1a).  Basile’s final goal was the winning goal that was scored with 0:01 remaining on the clock.

Penn Yan scored eight of the last nine goals in their 10-7 win over Chenango Forks. The Mustangs return to the Finals for the first time since 2016. Victor, playing in Syracuse against ESM easily won their game 18-3 and will advance to play Garden City on Saturday.

The Rochester Chapter of USLacrosse has announced the 2018 Herb Fitch Lacrosse All Star Game player selections. This year`s contest, featuring some of the best of the graduating seniors will be held on Thursday, June 14th at Victor High School. The boys` game will start at 8:00 PM after the girls` play at 6:00 PM and the youth clinic which starts at 4:30.

# 1434  Victor Wins in Overtime

Alexander Mabbett scored off a feed from Joey Pezzimenti 1:59 into the second overtime period to give Victor the 10-9 win over Webster Thomas.  This is the fifth consecutive win for the Blue Devils.  Victor started off the game strong and took an early 5-2 in the second quarter.  They continued to put up points and increased their lead to 7-3 with 9:50 remaining in the third quarter.  After that Thomas put on the back-burners.  They scored four straight goals before Victor added their 8th.  The Titans continued to push all the way through the fourth and into the two overtime periods.  Both teams had shots at the cage in overtime and it was edge of your seat lacrosse for both periods.

Top seeded Victor held fifth seeded Schroeder scoreless for 39 minutes spanning all four quarters to defeat the Warriors 7-4.  Schroeder defeated fourth seeded Irondequoit 10-7 to make the Semi-Finals for the first time since 2016.  Victor has now made the Finals for the sixth straight time.

It is hard to imagine, but we are entering the final week of regular season games. The last games will be played on Friday and the tournaments will begin on May 21st. Two hundred and forty-seven games have been played thus far. Sixty-four (of seventy-three out of Section games scheduled) have been played. Section five teams have won forty-five (70%). Victor, Thomas, HF-L, Gananda and McQuaid Jesuit continue at the top of their leagues.

Thursday: DAY IN REVIEW: There were four one-goal games today as HF-L beat Spencerport, Aquinas bested Livonia-Avon in overtime, Waterloo beat B-H and Brighton defeated Schroeder. Pittsford played a close game but lost to Victor and Thomas remained undefeated with thweir win over Hilton.

# 1374  Victor Scores Seven Unanswered in Win

After a close half, Victor pulled away and defeated Webster Schroeder 9-4.  The Warriors played a close fought quarter and a half before Victor scored seven unanswered goals spanning the last three quarters.  Victor opened up the soring with Mitchell Cain assisting Alexander Mabbett 1:09 into the game.  Schroeder responded with back to back goals to take the lead.  Jonathan Kay assisted Hunter Olsen for an outside midrange shot.  Three minutes later, Connor Bollin assisted Justin Connolly to the left flat.  The first quarter continued with back and forth attempts at the cage.  Neither team scored until Victor came off a dead ball with 0:02 remaining.  A quick pass onto the crease by Sam Lambert to Cain tied the game at 2-2 as time expired.

Thursday: DAY IN REVIEW: There were fourteen games played today, some in the snow, but all in the cold. Most games were not very close but Mynderse fought back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Waterloo 8-7. Penfield defeated Pittsford and Midlakes beat the Pride. Victor, Gananda and Thomas all remain undefeated.

SATURDAY: DAY IN REVIEW: Although the forecast called for an ice storm throughout the day, nine games were able to be completed on a very cold day. Penn Yan won in double overtime with a goal by Colton Smith. Gananda won an exciting 11-10 victory over Pal-Mac as the combination of seniors Brett Cunningham and Henry Bush combined for seven goals which proved to be the difference. Spencerport and Schroeder had two ties before the Warriors scored two goals in the last quarter for a 6-4 win.

# 1285  All Greater Rochester 2017

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle announced their 2017 All-Greater Rochester Lacrosse team today. The list features the top sixteen players and a number of honorable mentions were led by Canandaigua senior Attackman, Devin Andrews who was named "Player of the Year". Andrews, who was also a US Lacrosse All-American, scored 72 goals and 47 assists this year. The SportsFive Offensive Player of the Year plans to study and play at Stony Brook next year.

# 1274  Class B State Title - Victor over Yorktown

Victor won their third straight State Title with a 9-3 win over Yorktown.  The Blue Devils trailed briefly after Yorktown scored the opening goal.  However, they responded with seven goals and controlled the pace of the entire game.  The Huskers added two goals in the third, but they never came back within range.  The Blue Devils were led in scoring by Class B Offensive MVP Alexander Mabbett with 2g-2a.  Matt Gardner was named Defensive Player of the Game.

Victor advanced to their third straight State Finals with an 11-5 win over Vestal (Section IV).  The Blue Devils are the two-time defending State Champions and are looking for their third straight win.  Victor will face Yorktown (Section I).  The Huskers defeated Garden City 5-4 in double overtime to advance.  Yorktown also returns to the State Finals (they lost 9-6 to JD last season).  Victor came out of the gate strong and scored the first five goals to lead 5-0 with 4:50 remaining in the opening quarter.

# 1268  Looking Ahead: Upstate Championships

At this point only the final four are left and in each class there are two teams in the Upstate Tournaments and two are in the Downstate Tournaments. As Wednesday is a school day, the games have been split with the Class A and Class B games being played in Rochester (St. John Fisher College) and the Class C and Class D being played in Syracuse (CNS). Downstate , Class B and Class B will be played at SUNY Albany and the Class C and Class D games will be played at Adelphi University. The winners will play for the State Championships on Saturday at St. John Fisher College (Rochester).

Section Five representative Victor defeated Section Six representative Hamburg 7-4 in the Western Regional Championship.  The Blue Devils were led in scoring by Joey Pezzimenti with 3g-1a.  Sam Lambert added another 3a.  Each of the four Hamburg goals were scored by a different player.

Victor won their fourth consecutive (and sixth overall) Section Five Title tonight with a 13-4 win over Canandaigua.  The Blue Devils have reached the finals five straight times, with their loss four years ago against Canandaigua in overtime 11-10 (HERE).  Tonight, the Blue Devils scored the first five goals and continued to hold at minimum a four goal lead the remainder of the game.

In a game were the score was closer than the contest, Victor defeated Brighton 13-9.  The Blue Devils had an 8 goal lead in the fourth quarter (13-5), before Brighton scored the final five goals.  The Barons kept the game close earlier, before Victor began to slowly pull away.  The Blue Devils held Brighton scoreless for 19 minutes spanning the entire third quarter.  Victor advances to the finals for the fifth consecutive time (three time defending Champion).

Webster Thomas played a close one with Hamburg (Section VI). The Titans led 5-3 at the half and the teams traded goals in the second half. Brad Smith and Nick Mabe each had 2g-2a for Thomas. Fairport (11-3) travelled south to beat Corning (12-4) of Section IV with TJ Hendricks (1g-2a) and Jake Bucci (2g-1a) leading the Red Raider offense.

In what some were calling a possible Class B final, Victor took an 8-1 half to a 17-3 win against Webster Thomas as nine Blue Devils made the offensive scorebook. Freshman attackman Joey Pezzimenti led the scoring with 4g-1a. Chayse Ierlan made 13s (87%) in 38 minutes for Victor. Nick Mabe scored 2g for Thomas.

Victor defeated Pittsford for the fourth year and handed the Panthers their first loss of the season with their 6-3 win. Victor controlled nearly the entire contest and led 6-1 with just over 2 minutes remaining in the contest. Zach Estabrooks score four goals for the Blue Devils and goalie Chayse Ierlan made 7s (70%) for Victor. There was a large crowd and Pittsford asked for a $2.00 donation in support of the National Wounded Warrior Foundation in the Shootout for Soldiers that will be hosted by Canandaigua this summer.

Fifty seconds made the difference and allowed Victor to continue its winning streak to fifty. Connor Kennan scored with an assist from Sam Lambert to give Victor a 5-4 win at home this morning. Although the Blue Devils took an early lead, scoring the first three goals, Loyola Academy returned to tie the game at 4-4 in the third quarter. Blue Devil goalie, Chayse Ierlan recorded eleven saves (73%).

DAY IN REVIEW: Mid seventy degrees was a rare treat for the players in the three games played today. Midlakes (5-0) won it's fifth game in a row when they traveled to Bloomfield Honeoye. The Macdonell boys took care of most of the scoring as Ryan posted 7g and Brandon added 3g-3a. Zach Davison recorded 13 saves (59%) for the Eagles. For the Pride, Tyler Joslyn and Jon Marble each turned in 3g-1a.

Victor scored seven unanswered goals on their way to a 20-8 win over Webster Thomas. The game was close for the first quarter before a weather delay between the first and second quarters. Coming out of the delay, Victor scored five unanswered goals to increase their lead to 9-2. The Blue Devils had 10 players make their offensive scorebook with Drew Collins leading with 4g-2a. Mike DeMarco (4g-1a), Jamie Trimboli (3g-1a) and Ryan Maloney (2g-2a) added to the scorebook for Victor.

Victor took the game into running time to start the third quarter on their way to a 20-8 win over Hamburg. The Bulldogs came back in the fourth quarter after the Blue Devils pulled their starters. Victor played four different goalies during the game. Starting goalie Chayse Ierlan played the opening half and had 2 recorded saves and 3 goals against. Brennan Mackey played the third quarter with 2s/2ga. Justin Young (1s/3ga) and Connor Solomon (1s/1ga) split the fourth quarter.

Victor became the lone Section V representative to make it to the State Finals with an 11-9 win over Jamesville-Dewitt. They will go on to play Manhasset on Saturday at Vestal High School in the State Finals. The Blue Devils had a slow start before taking control in the second quarter and holding the lead through the second half. They looked strong though the entire contest and controlled the pacing of the game. Attackman Ryan Maloney finished with 3g-2a to lead Victor. Face off specialist TD Ierlan had another impressive contest finishing 19/22 (86%). He also led his team in ground balls with thirteen.

The All Star list is out recognizing the Monroe County League players for the 2015 season. Senior midfielder Kevin Hill (Thomas), attackman, Connor Hulme (Canandaigua) and Long Stick Defenseman Allen Thibodeau (Fairport) were named US Lacrosse Academic All Americans. Senior midfielder Brandon Barker (Pittsford) along with senior attackman Max Spaan (Penfield) and senior goalie Willie Klan (Penfield) selected as US Lacrosse All Americans. Juniors Jared Conners(Pittsford-LSM), T.D. Ierlan (Victor mid/fo) and Jamie Trimboli (Victor - mid) were also named as US Lacrosse All Americans.

COMMENTS: Seniors Mike DeMarco (2g-2a) and Ryan Maloney(4g) led the offensive effort while Sophomore starting goalie Chayse Ierlan made 5s/2ga in his 32 minutes in the goal. His brother, T.D. Ierlan won all 15 of his face off draws.

# 444  Semi: Victor to Meet Pittsford in Finals

Victor scored thirteen goals before Webster Schroeder got on the board. The Blue Devils won 21-4. They score too many unanswered goals to itemize each play. However, some stand-out performances throughout the game included: Ryan Maloney intercepting a pass between a defenseman and the goalie and scoring behind the back without breaking stride and long stick Patrick Barrow taking the ball coast and coast and scoring. Schroeder's first goal was scored with an impressive cross crease feed through traffic from Conor Bollin to Collin Griffin. Bollin finished with 2g-1a on 4 goals for the Warriors.

# 439  2016 All-Section Five List Released

This is the sixth year for the Section Five All-Section Team. It is an effort by the Lacrosse Committee and the coaches of Section Five to identify some of the top players among the over 1,100 varsity players in the section this year. Nominations for the lists came from Head coaches, administrators and SportsFive personnel. This year 15 players were selected for the first team, 13 players for second team and this year, 12 players on the third team. Our six All Americans automatically make the first team. All players on this list must first be named to their first team All-League teams or be from Independent teams.

It was the second meeting of the Victor Blue Devils and the Orchard Park Quakers this year and the result was the same as the Blue Devils defeated the powerful Section VI Class A Quakers 17-7 in the Western Regionals in Buffalo today. The first game (on April 30th) saw Victor winning 19-5.

# 431  Victor Over Corning in Semis

There is not much to say about the Victor Blue Devil win tonight as they cruised past Corning in the semifinal Class A game at Bragman Stadium (CN-S High School). Victor face off specialist won his first eleven face offs in the first half (and finished with 17 of 18) to give the Blue Devils almost exclusive ball time. With a very patient opening offense the players moved the ball from every direction, while scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter and ending the half up 9-1.

Pittsford came into the "Big Game" ready to avenge their earlier loss and eager to prove that they could be "the top team in the country and they nearly did so. After leading for most of the game. Victor senior attackman scored three goals in a row to give the Blue Devils their second and final lead of the game.
